Earned Resolution Only
Payoff must feel deserved from prior tension.
The payoff in your ad has to feel deserved. If the viewer hasn't gone through enough tension, your resolution feels hollow — like the hero winning the fight without ever being hit. Earned resolution is satisfying. Unearned resolution is forgettable.
Why This Works
Narrative psychology shows that the brain evaluates outcomes relative to the journey that produced them. A resolution that arrives after sufficient tension activates reward circuits. A resolution that arrives too easily triggers a "that was too simple" skepticism response. The brain literally discounts easy answers.
In Your Ads
Before your big reveal or CTA, count the tension beats. If you've only set up one layer of tension, your resolution probably feels thin. Stack at least two or three layers — the surface problem, the hidden cost, the emotional toll — before you offer the way out. The deeper the hole, the more powerful the ladder.
When This Breaks
Your ad sets up a minor inconvenience, then presents your product as a life-changing solution. The gap between the problem and the payoff makes the whole thing feel like an overreaction.
