A Disruptive Statement opens with a declaration that breaks the viewer's expectation for what an ad sounds like — "I hate ads" or "Most supplements are a scam". It triggers the orienting response, an involuntary reflex where attention redirects toward any unexpected stimulus. The mismatch between "expected ad" and "actual content" creates a 200-400 ms attention window during which the viewer cannot scroll. Disruptive Statements work because scrolling is a pattern-matching behavior — the feed trains users to skim for familiar signals. Anything that breaks the pattern captures attention by default. The risk: the disruption must resolve into something valuable, or the viewer scrolls the moment the novelty wears off.

The reason Disruptive Statement hooks outperform generic openings is that orienting response is processed involuntarily. The viewer's brain cannot opt out — the response fires before conscious attention decides whether to engage.
