Authority & Framing
Authority Setup
Activates authority bias. The brain uses competence signals as shortcuts, assigning more weight to credible sources.
An authority setup establishes the speaker's credibility through competence signals — not by claiming expertise, but by demonstrating it. The brain uses authority as a cognitive shortcut: if the source is credible, the message gets processed with less resistance. Authority earned in the first few seconds pays dividends through the entire ad.
Why This Works
Authority bias is one of the most robust findings in social psychology. Milgram's research showed that perceived authority dramatically influences behavior and belief. In advertising, authority signals reduce the cognitive effort required to evaluate claims. The brain essentially says "this person knows what they're talking about, I can trust the information without verifying each point."
In Your Ads
Use authority setups when you have genuine credentials your audience respects. But show, don't tell. "I've spent $2M on paid social in the last 12 months" is demonstrated authority. "I'm an expert in paid social" is a claim. Results, specific experience, and visible proof beat titles and self-descriptions.
When This Breaks
When authority is claimed without evidence, it triggers skepticism instead of trust. "Industry leader" with no proof is a red flag, not a credential.
Example
"After managing ad creative for 47 D2C brands and analyzing over 10,000 ads, I noticed something that changes everything about how you should test."
When To Use It
Use Authority Setup when you need to establish credibility before making your pitch. This technique builds the frame that everything else hangs on. Without context, even the strongest message feels unearned.
