Mental Model Explanation

Provides a cognitive scaffold. Frameworks help the brain organize complex information, making the viewer feel in control.

A mental model explanation gives the viewer a framework — a way to organize complex information into a structure they can use. Once the brain has a model, it can categorize, predict, and act with confidence. The shift from "this is overwhelming" to "now I have a framework" is one of the most satisfying cognitive experiences.

Why This Works

Cognitive scaffolding is how the brain manages complexity. Without a model, information is scattered data. With a model, the same information becomes structured knowledge. The brain craves frameworks because they reduce cognitive load and increase the sense of control. Providing a mental model makes the viewer feel competent and in command.

In Your Ads

Use mental model explanations when your audience faces complexity they don't have a framework for. "There are exactly 7 psychological moves in every converting ad. Once you can see them, you can build them." The model should be simple enough to remember and robust enough to apply.

When This Breaks

When the model is too complex to hold in working memory or too simplistic to be useful, it fails to provide the scaffolding benefit.

Example

"Think of every ad as a sequence of psychological triggers. Each one does a specific job: capture, escalate, prove, convert. Miss one and the chain breaks."

When To Use It

Use Mental Model Explanation when it's time to present your value, demonstrate your solution, or teach something useful. This technique transfers value from you to the viewer. It's where the promise becomes proof.
