Value & Proof Techniques
Assumption Shift
Disrupts default thinking. Surfacing a hidden assumption creates vulnerability that opens the viewer to new ideas.
An assumption shift surfaces a belief the viewer holds unconsciously — then disrupts it. When a hidden assumption becomes visible and questionable, the viewer's mental model becomes unstable. That instability creates an opening for new ideas to enter. You can't change someone's mind until you first make them aware of what they currently assume.
Why This Works
Hidden assumptions function as invisible load-bearing walls in the brain's belief structure. Surfacing them creates cognitive vulnerability — a state where the brain recognizes its own blind spot and becomes temporarily more open to new information. This is the mechanism behind every paradigm shift: the old assumption must be seen before it can be replaced.
In Your Ads
Use assumption shifts when your audience operates on a false premise they're not aware of. "You assume the creative is the variable. What if the creative is just the surface — and the real variable is the psychological structure underneath?" The assumption must be genuinely hidden, not something the viewer already questions.
When This Breaks
When the "hidden assumption" is actually well-known, the shift feels condescending rather than revelatory.
Example
"You've been assuming that more creative variations = better chance of winning. What if the opposite is true — and fewer, structurally correct ads outperform by 10x?"
When To Use It
Use Assumption Shift when it's time to present your value, demonstrate your solution, or teach something useful. This technique transfers value from you to the viewer. It's where the promise becomes proof.
